The True Meaning of Religion
Moliere, Voltaire, Eliot, and Mahfouz all criticized religious people of their times who lost the true meaning of God and religion. The messages of their stories are similar, calling us to lead a life of love and respect for others, rather than being selfish. Instead of worshipping money and material objects,we should focus on the betterment of society through giving to those less fortunate and not seeking personal gain.
Voltaire found that Newton's laws of motion were a good analogy for improving the human condition.
- Newton's first law- Inertia. An object at rest stays at rest. This can be interpreted that the world will never change and society will never get better if we don't act in order to change it.
- Newton's third law- Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. Like the Christian Golden Rule, we should treat others with respect and love if we want to be treated in the same way. If we choose violence instead, we will get the same in return.
